SigEp Facts

Our founder, Carter Ashton Jenkens, justified for the existence of this fraternity by stating, "This Fraternity Will Be Different." Today, SigEp has kept to this justification by its innovation across all aspects of life. Below are some of the accomplishments which explain why SigEp is where it is today.
  • Founded on November 1, 1901, at Richmond College.
  • Over the past two decades, SigEp has recruited more men than any other collegiate fraternity. Currently, over 14,000 undergraduates are members, making SigEp the largest national fraternity in the nation.
  • SigEp is represented at 265 Chapters throughout the nation.
  • SigEp is represented at nearly all of the Nation's Top 125 Colleges
  • Maintains the highest first-year member retention rate, over 90%, of any national fraternity.
  • 255,000 lifetime members rank SigEp in the top four among national fraternities.
  • Governed by the Grand Chapter, which is composed of undergraduate delegates from each chapter, District Governors, and the National Board of Directors.
  • SigEp is the first fraternity to give a bid to an African-American
SigEp is also known to be a fraternity known for it's "Firsts." SigEp was FIRST:
  • To charter a chapter in all 50 states.
  • To provide financial assistance to brothers for graduate school through the Resident Scholar Program.
  • To receive a grant from the federal Department of Education to enhance member development programs.
  • To establish a traveling staff to assist chapters in effective operations.
  • Fraternity whose Educational Foundation built an endowment greater than $11 million.
  • To partner with the White House's National Drug Control Policy.
  • IFC National Fraternity to issue a bid of membership to an African-American. (Secretary of Commerce Ron Brown)
  • National Fraternity, in the spring of 2005, to reach an average national GPA above a 3.0. By 2011, SigEp hopes to reach an average national GPA of 3.15.
